Mercury EFI 4 Stroke 60 HP: Fuel Filter, Oil Change and Gear Case Lubrication Change

Step 1: Fuel filter

Prior to doing this, you may want to drain the fuel that is in the lines to the engine. Even when I did this, I still had about 2 oz of fuel that came out of the line.

Needed: Quicksilver In-Line Fuel Filter (part # 35-879885Q), zip tie, rag, wire cutters

a. Tilt the engine down
b. Locate the existing fuel filter, it is on the side of the engine near the oil dipstick
c. Cut the zip tie holding the rubber sleeve (use the wire cutters) that covers the fuel filter in place, pull back the rubber sleeve
d. Place a rag under the fuel filter and disconnect the existing fuel filter (the fuel lines just pull off), use the rag to collect what spills
e. Replace the fuel filter, keep the orientation the same way as the old one
f. Reassemble in the reverse order

Step 2: Oil Change

Needed: Mercury Oil filter (part # 35-8M0065104), Mercury 4-stroke Synthetic Oil 10w-30 (part # 92-858045K01) 3qt, rag, oil filter wrench (small), oil pan, funnel, 18MM socket

a. Tilt the engine down
b. Pack the rag under the filter
c. Remove the oil filter (use the wrench if necessary), wipe up any spilled oil
d. Lube the o-ring on the filter, then replace the filter, turning 3/4 turn once contact is made between the filter and the engine (hand tighten)
e. Tilt the engine up and turn the steering wheel to the left (so the oil plug is facing down)
f. Remove the oil plug with the 18mm socket and catch all oil (3qts removed)
g. Replace the oil plug
h. Tilt the engine down
i. Refill the oil

Step 3: Gear Case Lubrication Change

Needed: Quicksilver High Performance Gear Lube SAE90 (part # 92-858064Q01) 32oz, Gear Lube Pump (part # 802891Q), rag, oil drip pan, flat head screw driver

a. Tilt the engine down
b. Position the oil drip pan under the engine
c. Remove the two vent screws using the screw driver
d. Remove the gear case drain plug using the screw driver
e. Catch the gear lubricant that comes out (about 11oz)
f. Pump the new fluid in through the drain plug until the lube comes out the rear vent hole, when this occurs replace the screw in the rear vent hole
g. Continue pumping until fluid comes out the front vent hole, when this occurs replace the screw in the front vent hole
h. Replace the screw in the drain plug. NOTE: be sure the rubber washers are all present on all three screws when they are replaced
i. You should have put about 11oz of lube back into the gear case, wipe up any spilled fluid

Step 4: Fuel Filter

There is another fuel filter that can also be easily swapped out. The dealer recommended that I do this every 3 years. The part # was 35-879884T.
